Taipei, Jan. 19 (CNA) An approaching frontal surface and cold air mass from mainland China are expected to send temperatures plunging to 10 degrees Celsius in coastal and open areas of northern Taiwan before the weekend, the Central Weather Bureau said Monday.

The frontal surface will pass over Taiwan on Wednesday, bringing showers to mountainous regions of the country, the bureau said.

The cold air mass from China, meanwhile, will affect mainly northern and northeastern parts of the island Jan. 22 and Jan. 23, with temperatures in coastal and open areas of the north expected to fall to lows of 10 degrees, the bureau said.

The weather will be sunny after Wednesday, however, as the cold air mass is expected to be dry, the bureau said.

It said temperatures will start rising again by Jan. 24 as the cold front weakens.

In its forecast for Monday, the weather bureau said showers can be expected in the mountains of eastern, southern and northern Taiwan.
