Taipei, Sept. 14 (CNA) A 38-year-old police detective died after apparently being beaten up by a violent mob outside a department store in Taipei early Sunday.

Taipei police said they received a report at 1:10 a.m. Sunday about an assault outside the ATT 4 FUN department store in the city's Xinyi District.

Detective Hsueh Chen-kuo was found covered in blood on the ground with a knife stuck in his mouth, according to the police. He was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital.

According to the initial police report, Hsueh was apparently handling a disturbance at a night club in the department store when he was assaulted by a group of 50 suspects with sticks and knives for at least three minutes.

Witnesses reported seeing Hsueh being dragged out of the night club by the mob and beaten to death on the streets.

Police said they have set up a special team to investigate the case and vowed to bring the suspects to justice.

Several unanswered questions remain, in particular why Hsueh was at the scene in the first place when he may have been off duty.

Police will also go through the surveillance footage in the area to identify the suspects, law enforcement authorities said.
