Taipei, April 24 (CNA) The Taipei City Council approved a plan Tuesday to assemble a promotional team in preparation for the city's bid for the 2016 World Design Capital (WDC).

The promotional team will comprise 19-23 representatives from the industrial sector, academic circles and the central and local government.

Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin will head the team, while the Taipei City deputy mayor and vice minister of economic affairs will act as vice conveners.

In addition, a task force will also be set up under the promotional team to assist with the bid for the 2016 World Design Capital project.

The promotional team will remain in place until the end of 2013 and will be mainly responsible for preparing the application for the bid, monitoring its progress and integrating the resources of various government agencies and civil organizations.

Meanwhile, the task force will carry out nine projects in the areas of the economy, city vision, basic infrastructure, environmental sustainability, city safety, Taipei's image, cultural creativity, health care, and human resources.

The World Design Capital is a biennial event organized by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, which after close evaluation will choose a city with the most design potential.

Since the event was launched in 2008 in Italy, the cites chosen as the WDC have been Seoul, South Korea in 2010; Helsinki, Finland in 2012; and Cape Town, South Africa, which won the 2014 bid last year.

The application to bid for the WDC is more than just an activity, it is also an indicator that the city has solved problems through the application of social design concepts during its development and has transformed into a more livable place, said Taipei City's Department of Cultural Affairs.

Taipei successful hosting of the World Design Expo in October 2011 is a key factor in its efforts to bid for the WDC, the department added.
