Taipei, May 16 (CNA) St. Lucia's new ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan) Edwin Laurent has arrived in Taipei to assume his post and has pledged to further promote the bilateral ties based on the existing foundation, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Wednesday.

In a statement, MOFA said Ambassador Laurent arrived in Taipei on Sunday and presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) Tuesday.

At the meeting, Wu extended a warm welcome to Laurent and expressed confidence that new St. Lucian ambassador to Taiwan will help strengthen bilateral relations, the ministry said.

Wu also said he hoped the Caribbean diplomatic ally would continue to support Taiwan's bid for meaningful participation in international organizations, according to the foreign ministry.

In response, Laurent reaffirmed St. Lucian Prime Minister Allen Chastanet's commitment to supporting Taiwan and said his country highly values the bilateral relations, MOFA said.

Laurent also pledged to further consolidate the ties between St. Lucia and Taiwan by promoting enhanced cooperation and exchanges in political, economic, trade and cultural fields, the ministry said.

Laurent succeeds Hubert Emmanuel, who left Taipei in March after serving for about two and a half years as St. Lucia's ambassador to Taiwan.
