Taipei, Aug. 1 (CNA) A submarine development center established by the state-owned shipbuilder CSBC Corp. Taiwan opened Monday, with the aim of participating in the country's indigenous defense submarine (IDS) program.

The Submarine Development Center of CSBC (SDCC) will initially employ technicians, specialists and consultants from home and abroad to promote the domestic construction of military vessels, including submarines, military and coast guard vessels, said CSBC Chairman Cheng Wen-long (鄭文隆).

The Navy is planning to spend NT$3 billion (US$95.09 million) to complete the design blueprint of a locally built submarine, which is slated to be completed by the end of this year. SDCC will bid on the NT$3 billion design project, according to Cheng.

CSBC built 116 vessels of various types for the Navy between 1975 and 2015.
