Honduras' new ambassador to Taiwan set to take post: ministry

Taipei, Jan. 20 (CNA) Honduras has assigned a new ambassador to Taiwan who will come "soon" to Taiwan to formally assume his post, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

Ministry spokeswoman Anna Kao confirmed that Rafael Sierra Fernando Quesada will be Honduras' new ambassador to Taiwan.

"He will arrive in Taiwan soon," she said, but declined to provide further details.

The confirmation came after a photo of Sierra, who was appointed by Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez as the Central American country's top envoy to Taiwan, was posted on the official website of the Honduran government recently.

Honduras recalled Mario Alberto Fortin Midence in May 2013 amid reports that the country wanted to forge closer ties with China, sparking concern that it would eventually shift diplomatic recognition to Beijing.

Honduras has been represented in Taiwan by a charge d'affaires ad interim since then. The charge d'affaires is now Misael Vallecillo, who succeeded Alejandro Young last year.

Honduras is one of Taiwan's 22 diplomatic allies.
