Taipei, Nov. 29 (CNA) Hualien County Magistrate Fu Kun-chi, an independent, won re-election Saturday in a landslide victory.

The 52-year-old had won 56.53 percent of the votes in the eastern county, scoring a decisive victory against five rivals -- including his own wife, according to official data.

His closest competitor was Tsai Chi-ta of the Kuomintang, who garnered about 27.62 percent of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission.

In 2009, Fu won over 56 percent of the vote when he first vied for the top job in the county, defeating independent Chang Chih-ming and Tu Li-hua, who was backed by the ruling Kuomintang.

Fu was a legislator from 2002-2009.

Though it is Taiwan's largest county by land area, Hualien is separated from the urbanized west coast of Taiwan by the Central Mountain Range and is home to just 333,000 people.
