Taipei, Nov. 21 (CNA) Taiwan's Ministry of Examination Wednesday promulgated an amendment to the Professionals and Technologists Examinations Act passed by the Legislature Nov. 6., allowing foreign nationals to take relevant exams in English.

The main part of the amendment, which gives foreign professionals who sit a license exam the option of taking the tests in English or Chinese, took effect Wednesday, according to the ministry.

Prior to the amendment, both foreign and Taiwanese national applicants in certain professions were required sit a license exam administered in Chinese by the ministry.

Huang Ching-chang (黃慶章), head of the ministry's professional and technical exams bureau, said the amendment further provides more opportunities for foreign nationals and overseas ethnic Chinese to take exams.

Citing the example of people from ethnic Chinese communities in Malaysia, Huang said that they usually understood Chinese, but requiring foreign nationals who are not-ethnically Chinese to take exams in Chinese is a major obstacle.

Allowing foreign nationals and people from ethnic Chinese communities around the world to take exams in English or Chinese is a major breakthrough, he pointed out.

The ministry's website provides a long list of professional and technical jobs open to foreign nationals, including Chinese medicine practitioners, tour managers, tour guides, social workers, psychologists, respiratory therapists and certified public bookkeepers.
