Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) The winners of the 9th Presidential Cultural Awards were announced Friday by the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC), with four individuals and one group recognized for their contributions to Taiwanese society.

The biennial awards are divided into five categories -- cultural endeavor, humanitarian contributions, youth creativity, social reform and indigenous hope -- according to the GACC.

In the cultural endeavor category, the winner was Huang Yung-sung (黃永松), publisher of various notable magazines in the 70s, such as Han Sheng: Echo. Huang has long been a guardian of Taiwan's folk culture and his efforts to preserve local culture were also recognized in China after the 90s.

Doctor Samuel Noordhoff (羅慧夫) received the award in the humanitarian category for his promotion of medical care in rural Taiwan while serving as president of Mackay Memorial Hospital and practicing medicine all over the island.

Suming‧Rupi (舒米恩‧魯碧), a Taiwanese indigenous musician, singer, songwriter and actor, won the youth creativity award for his efforts to help safeguard tribal culture and for his continued production of innovative music, which earned him a Golden Melody award in 2016.

Taiwanese gay rights crusader Chi Chia-wei (祁家威), who has pushed for the legalization of same-sex marriage in the country for 30 years, took the award in the social reform category.

The group winner in the indigenous hope category went to Sinyi Realty's "One family in Community" project, which, since it started in 2004 has attracted participants from across Taiwan and has encouraged more enterprises to support grassroots movements.

Each recipient will receive a trophy and a certificate, along with NT$1 million (US$30,548) in cash, which will be presented by President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) later this year at the Presidential Office.
