Taipei, Jan. 25 (CNA) Former Vice Premier Yeh Chu-lan (葉菊蘭) was elected Wednesday as chairwoman of Taiwan Visitors Association (TVA) and pledged to tap the vast Asia Pacific market as a major source of tourism.

Immediately after her election by the TVA board of directors, Yeh named her predecessor, Janice Lai (賴瑟珍), as honorary chairwoman of the association, which was established 60 years ago.

Yeh promised to use her experience, connections and political resources to boost Taiwan's tourism industry, focusing mainly on the Asia Pacific source market with its population of 2 billion.

In addition to promoting Taiwan internationally, Yeh said, she will work hard to "bring the world to Taiwan."

Yeh has served as a lawmaker, transportation minister, head of the Hakka Affairs Council, vice premier, acting mayor of Kaohsiung and secretary general of the Presidential Office.
