Taipei, May 24 (CNA) HTC Corp. became the best-selling mobile phone brand in Taiwan in April, accounting for a 30.6 percent market share, the Taiwanese smartphone maker said Friday.

Thanks to continued brisk sales of its popular 5-inch Butterfly phone and smoother production of its champion flagship device the new HTC One, the company managed to outsell its formidable foreign rivals in the home market last month, an HTC executive said.

He cited figures from an authoritative market research firm to prove that HTC had reclaimed the crown of the top handset brand in Taiwan in April.

HTC's closest competitor Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea was second with a market share of 26.7 percent in April.

Samsung's new flagship model the Galaxy S4 did not hit local store shelves until late April, which might have been a major factor behind the company's drop to second place, market analysts said.

Sony Corp. of Japan was third, securing an 18.4 percent share of overall handset sales in Taiwan in April, while the U.S. consumer electronics giant Apple Inc. was fourth with a 10.1 percent share.

Another Taiwanese manufacturer AsusTek Computer ranked fifth, with a 2.1 percent share.

Market survey data also showed that the HTC Butterfly, which comes with the world's first 5-inch full high-definition 1080p screen, remained the best-selling smartphone in Taiwan in April, with a 6.9 percent market share. The model emerged as the top seller for the first time in March.

Meanwhile, the 32GB version of the new HTC One surged to fourth place on the best seller list in April, with a 4.1 percent share of overall local mobile phone sales.

The figure indicates that shipments of the new HTC One have become smoother and have been increasing steadily, market analysts said. Sales of the model fell short of expectations initially due to glitches in the components supply line.

Sony's Xperia Z and Samsung's Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S3 took second, third and fifth places, respectively, on the list of best selling models in April, according to the survey.
