Taiwan beats Peru to grab first U-12 Softball World Cup title

Taipei, July 30 (CNA) Taiwan defeated Peru 3-2 Tuesday to win the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-12 Softball World Cup, an international tournament for players under the age of 12.

Held for the first time, the tournament ran from July 26-30 at the Gueiren Baseball Stadium in Tainan.

The countries that competed in the five-day event were Taiwan, Peru, Indonesia and the Czech Republic.

Prior to the final against Peru, Taiwan won all six of its matches in the opening round, followed by Peru with four wins and two losses, and the Czech Republic with two wins and four losses.

Indonesia came last with zero wins out of its six games played.

WBSC Secretary-General Beng Cho Low, who presided over the medal award ceremony in Tainan, praised the southern Taiwanese city for holding the first-ever U-12 Softball World Cup, and thanked everyone who took part in the tournament.

It was also the first co-ed softball world championship tourney to be held, she noted, adding that the WBSC will strive to continue developing the tournament in the future.

According to the WBSC, it is the first and only international sports federation to stage World Cups starting at the U-12 level.
