Taipei, July 9 (CNA) Taiwanese table tennis players Liao Cheng-ting (廖振珽) and Su Pei-ling (蘇珮綾) clinched a bronze medal in the table tennis mixed doubles competition at the 2019 Universiade in Naples on Monday, after losing to a Chinese team in the semifinals.

Liao and Su actually led the best-of-seven semifinal two games to one and fought back from an 8-2 deficit to even up the fourth game at 8-8, but the Chinese team of Yu Ziyang (于子洋) and Wang Yidi (王藝迪) took command after that, winning the match 11-4, 7-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-1, 11-5.

Because there is no match played for the bronze medal in the Universiade table tennis competition, Liao and Su took bronze simply by virtue of reaching the semifinal round and failing to advance to the final.

Yu and Wang will face another Chinese team, Zhao Zihao (趙子豪) and Fan Siqi (范思琪), for the gold medal.

The bronze was Liao's second medal at this year's Universiade in Italy after he won silver in the men's team event. He also won bronze medals in the men's team, men's doubles and mixed doubles events at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei two years ago.

The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation, and is held every two years. It was held in Taipei in 2017.
