
Taipei, June 22 (CNA) Taiwan reported 52,246 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, all but 33 of which were domestically transmitted, and 171 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from 4 years old to over 90. They included 158 individuals who had chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and 73 who were unvaccinated, the CECC said.
The 4-year-old girl passed away due to multiple organ dysfunction and bleeding in her lungs, the CECC said. Her death brings the number of children under 13 years old who have passed away due to COVID-19 in Taiwan to 19, according to CECC data.

Severe infections
The CECC also said that 131 previously reported COVID-19 cases had become severe, while 150 other individuals had developed moderate symptoms.
Among the new severe infections is a 9-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
Of the 3,358,480 domestic cases reported in Taiwan this year, 5,604 have been classified as severe infections and 7,806 as moderate, accounting for 0.17 percent and 0.23 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of June 21.
In all other cases, the infected individuals were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, the CECC said.
New domestic cases
Taichung reported the highest number of domestic cases Wednesday, with 7,909, followed by Kaohsiung with 6,992, and New Taipei with 6,444.
Tainan recorded 4,841 cases, Taoyuan 4,680, Changhua County 3,873, Taipei 3,516, Pingtung County 2,403, Yunlin County 1,617, Hsinchu County 1,283, Miaoli County 1,226, Nantou County 1,208, and Hsinchu City 1,127.
Chiayi County reported 980, Yilan County 980, Chiayi City 782, Hualien County 739, Keelung 699, Taitung County 514, Penghu County 243, Kinmen County 118, and the Matsu Islands 39.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 3,439,279 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 3,425,268 domestic infections.
With the 171 deaths reported Wednesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 5,651, CECC data showed.
