CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan extends national Level 3 COVID-19 alert to July 12
Taipei, June 23 (CNA) Taiwan's nationwide Level 3 COVID-19 alert has been extended to July 12, in response to the continued risk posed by domestic transmissions of the disease, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said Wednesday.
Under the Level 3 alert, schools will remain closed until the current semester ends in early July. People will still be required to wear masks at all times when they leave their homes, and a ban will be retained on indoor gatherings of more than four people and outdoor gatherings of more than nine people.
The Level 3 alert, the second-highest in Taiwan's four-tier COVID-19 alert scale, was first issued in Taipei and New Taipei on May 15.
It was implemented nationwide on May 19 and initially scheduled to end on May 28, but was subsequently extended twice, through June 14 and then June 28.
The government has now decided to retain the Level 3 alert for at least another two weeks beyond June 28, despite a significant drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases reported in recent weeks.
After averaging over 400 daily infections from mid-May through early June, daily case numbers dropped into the 200s from June 7 to 12, then into the 100s from June 13-20, and were in the double digits on Monday and Tuesday.
However, the government has expressed caution about lifting the restrictions given that only 6.76 percent of Taiwan's population had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as of Tuesday morning.
Taiwan on Wednesday reported 104 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number in the country to 14,260, of which over 13,800 have been domestic infections recorded since May 15.
