Sunny skies forecast around Taiwan but still cool at night

Taipei, Dec. 10 (CNA) Taiwan will see sunny skies and higher daytime temperatures Tuesday as a cold spell that had affected the country weakens, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The CWB said temperatures will hit highs of up to 24 degrees Celsius in northern Taiwan, up about 2-3 degrees from a day earlier, and up to 25 degrees in central Taiwan and 26 degrees in the south, up 1-2 degrees from Monday.

The mercury is expected to plunge at night, however, to 13 degrees in northern Taiwan, 14 degrees in central Taiwan and 15 degrees in the south, the CWB said, warning of a wide day-night temperature gap.

Early Tuesday morning, temperatures in low-lying areas fell as low as 8.8 degrees at the CWB's monitoring station in Baoshan in Hsinchu County and 9.8 degrees at the Neimen monitoring station in Kaohsiung.

While stable weather is expected for Tuesday, sporadic showers could occur in northern and northeastern Taiwan, the CWB said.

The weather pattern seen Tuesday could change Wednesday as a new northeasterly wind system sets in, which could send daytime highs 3-4 degrees lower, the CWB said.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Administration said air quality was generally good in northern Taiwan, Yilan, Hualien and Taitung counties in the east and offshore Penghu County, while fair air quality was expected in central Taiwan, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung in the south and the Matsu and Kinmen islands.
