Taipei, July 15 (CNA) Leading PC brands Asustek Computer Inc. (華碩) and Acer Inc. (宏碁) suffered more than 10 percent year-on-year declines in unit sales in the second quarter as the global PC market remained in the doldrums, according to market advisory firm Gartner Inc.

The declines recorded by the Taiwanese PC vendors were steeper than the 4.3 percent year-on-year drop in worldwide PC shipments during the April-June period, a Gartner report showed.

Asustek shipped 4.04 million PCs in the second quarter, down 10.3 percent from a year earlier. Its global market share of 6.6 percent, which was fifth highest among PC vendors, was down from 7 percent a year earlier, the report said.

Acer shipped 3.85 million PCs during the same three months, down 12.5 percent from a year earlier, and it ranked sixth in global market share with a 6.3 percent share, down from 6.9 percent a year earlier.

The two Taiwanese PC brands' sales by value in the second quarter echoed their declining unit sales, according to the report.

Asustek said its brand revenue for the April-June period fell 8 percent from a year earlier to NT$86.5 billion (US$2.85 billion), while Acer's consolidated sales were down 4.5 percent from a year earlier at NT$53.63 billion.

Asustek said it expected the second quarter to be the lowest point in 2017 with a peak season approaching in the second half of the year.

It said sales slumped during the quarter because it was a product transition period during which consumers put their purchasing plans on hold, waiting for the release of new models.

Gartner concurred, saying that an increase in PC prices due to more expensive components also led many consumers to postpone purchases until the price pressure eased.

According to Gartner, worldwide PC shipments totaled 61.11 million units, down from 63.88 million units seen a year earlier.

It was the 11th consecutive quarter the global PC industry saw falling shipments, and shipments in the second quarter were the lowest for any quarter since 2007, Gartner said.

U.S.-based HP Inc. ranked as the largest PC supplier in the world in the second quarter after shipping 12.69 million units to grab a 20.8 percent share in the market, up from 19.2 percent from a year earlier, Gartner said.

HP outperformed the broader PC market to post a 3.3 percent year-on-year shipment increase as the company posted strong sales in the U.S. market, Gartner added.

China's Lenovo Group Ltd. shipped 12.19 million PCs in the second quarter, down 8.4 percent from a year earlier. Lenovo's market share fell to 19.9 percent from 20.8 percent, according to Gartner.

U.S.-based Dell Inc. came in third, shipping 9.56 million PCs in the second quarter, up 1.4 percent from a year earlier to take a 15.6 percent market share, ahead of Apple Inc., which shipped 4.24 million units to gain a 6.9 percent share of the market, Gartner said.
