Acer's Liquid Leap smartband debuts in New York

Taipei, April 30 (CNA) Taiwanese computer maker Acer Inc. unveiled its first wearable device at a press conference in New York on Tuesday, jumping into the growing niche already crowded with products from such top handset brands as Sony Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co.

The Acer Liquid Leap, which is only 17 millimeters thick, can pair with various connected devices and track personal health data, said S.T. Liew, president of Acer's smartphone business group.

It is expected to go on sale in only a few markets in late July or early August this year, Liew said at the press conference. Price and other specifications of the device were not disclosed.

According to estimates by market researcher IDC, global shipments of wearable devices in 2014 will exceed 19 million units and could continue to grow over the next few years to about 112 million units in 2018.
