Taipei, Nov. 14 (CNA) Children between the ages of six and 12 residing in Taipei City will enjoy a 40 percent discount on Taipei metro fares starting Jan. 1, according to Taipei Rapid Transit Corp. (TRTC) President B.C. Yen (顏邦傑) on Tuesday.

Speaking at a Taipei City question and answer session, Yen, president of TRTC, the operator of Taipei's metro system, said that a 40 percent discount for metro passengers who are Taipei residents and aged six to 12 is scheduled to go into effect next Jan. 1.

Funding for the program will come from Taipei City's Department of Social Welfare (DOSW), which will budget an annual NT$115 million for the discount.

The TRTC is currently working with the DOSW to create an identification system that will enable those eligible to register their metro EasyCards in order to receive the discount.

Yen welcomed New Taipei City to collaborate with the TRTC and roll out a similar discount program, but noted that this is entirely up to the city government.

According to TRTC rules, metro passengers under the age of six do not have to pay metro fares.
