Taipei, Dec. 4 (CNA) Forestry authorities announced Thursday that they will be closing the mountain hiking trail leading to popular recreation spot Lake Jiaming in Taitung County beginning next week for maintenance.

The Taitung Forestry District Office said starting Dec. 10 and lasting until March 31, the mountain lodges and the hiking trail will be closed, and the office will stop accepting application to stay at the two cabins along the way.

The office said it has begun the first stage of restoration work on the hiking trail and is still planning work for the cabins and other parts of the trail.

As the second highest lake area in Taiwan, Jiaming's surroundings boast a vast and lush green prairie, rich wildlife and of course the lake itself, often described as an angel's teardrop for its oval shape.

The pristine environment has proven popular with nature lovers, attracting more than 10,000 visitors each year. The forestry office said the number keeps growing.

Due to the excessive use of the hiking trail and mountain lodges along with inclement conditions in the mountainous areas, several sections of the hiking trials have been seriously eroded and are in need of immediate repair.
