Taipei, July 23 (CNA) Hualien Air Base will be open to the public on the second Sunday in August to demonstrate the capability of Taiwan's air assets and to foster relations between civilians and the military, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said Tuesday.

The air base, home to the multirole F-16 Fighting Falcon, will hold its open day events from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 10, the MND said in a press release.

The open day will be held in celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the establishment of the Air Force on Aug. 14, 1937 and also to display its capability and build relations with the public, the ministry said.

The Air Force's Thunder Tiger Aerobatics Team and the main guardians of Taiwan's air space -- the F-16s, Mirage 2000s and the IDFs -- are expected to perform a series of aerial stunts to show their capabilities.

In addition, a drill will be carried out by an Air Force honor guard, while airmen will give a demonstration of their ground combat skills, according to the ministry.

The public will also have an opportunity to view an exhibition of various types of aircraft and weapons, including the state-of-the-art Apache attack helicopters, Black Hawk helicopters and Sky Bow ballistic missiles, the MND said.

Shuttle buses will provide transportation to the air base from pickup points at Hualien Distillery, Hualien Baseball Stadium, Hualien train station and Beipu train station between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., while the return service will begin at 4 p.m., the ministry said.

To gain admission to the base, Taiwanese nationals will be required to present their national ID card or some other form of identification, while foreign nationals married to Taiwanese must be accompanied by their spouses, the MND said.

Foreign caregivers should be accompanied by their employers and must present government-issued ID such as alien residence certificates (ARCs) or passports, it added.

Other foreign nationals wishing to attend the open day are advised to call 03-8221143 or 874058 for information, the MND said.
