Gunman arrested after shooting ex-vice president's son

Taipei, Nov. 26 (CNA) A gunman who allegedly shot Sean Lien, theson of former Vice President Lien Chan, at an election rally in aTaipei City suburb Friday night has been arrested, CriminalInvestigation Bureau Director-General Lin Teh-hua has confirmed.

According to Lin, the alleged gunman was believed to be a memberof a gang in Yonghe City in Taipei County, but he provided no otherdetails.

Lien, 40, was rushed to National Taiwan University Hospital foremergency treatment, but President Ma Ying-jeou said at a campaignrally for Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin that Lien's wound was not lifethreatening.

Lien resigned from his post as chairman of Taipei EasyCard Co.early this year for health reasons. He is now a member of the rulingKuomintang's Central Committee.

The attack came on the eve of elections of mayors and councilorsin Taipei City, Taipei County (to be renamed Xinbei City) and thespecial municipalities of Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung that will beestablished on Dec. 25.
