Taipei, May 6 (CNA) Premier Sean Chen said Sunday that he will formally approve the resignation of Edward Chen as chairman of the state-run Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower), and name incumbent Vice Economics Minister Huang Jung-chiou as the new head of the state-run utility company.
The premier said Minister of Economics Affairs Shih Yen-shiang had reported the case to him and that he had basically approved Chen's resignation, as well as agreeing to a suggestion by the Ministry of Economic Affairs to appoint Huang as Taipower chairman.
Cabinet spokesman Philip Yang said earlier in the day that the ministry submitted Chen's resignation to the Executive Yuan late May 4, along with its recommendation that Huang should take over the position.
The ministry informed the media late the following day that it had received and approved Chen's resignation, describing the move as part of efforts to push for reforms in the company, which has come under increasing fire over a recent decision to hike electricity rates.
