China Airlines to join Sky Team Alliance

Taipei, Sept. 4 (CNA) China Airlines (CAL) , Taiwan's largestinternational carrier, said Saturday it will join the Sky TeamAlliance to better serve its passengers through a wider range ofservices.

Chief executives of Sky Team's 13 member airlines arescheduled to visit Taiwan in mid-September and sign a letter ofintent with CAL to admit it to the group.

CAL said it will become the first Taiwanese carrier to join Sky Team and that the logo of the alliance will be carriedon the CAL fleet of aircraft, it said.

Sky Team, one of the world's three major airline alliances, wasfounded in June 2000. It currently provides approximately 13,000flight services to 898 destinations in 169 countries every day.

Among its member airlines are Aeroflot-Russian Airlines,Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, China SouthernAirlines, Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Kenya Airways, KLM RoyalDutch Airlines, Korean Air, Romanian Air Transport and VietnamAirlines.

After joining the alliance, CAL said, it is expected to increaseits destinations from the current 93 to 898 through code sharing withother member airlines.

In addition, CAL passengers will be able to collect mileagepoints through the alliance's frequent flyer program and will beallowed use the airport lounges operated by Sky Team members,it said.

CAL said its entry to Sky Team will help cut itsoperating costs as member carriers can share maintenance facilities,and it will have more flexibility to arrange its flight schedule.

After the letter of intent has been signed, CAL said, it willrequire another six months of negotiations to finalize the details ofthe agreement.
