Golden Melody: Mayday wins best Mandarin album

Taipei, June 24 (CNA) Taiwanese rock band Mayday (五月天) took the Best Album in Mandarin at the Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday with its album "History of Tomorrow."

Masa (瑪莎), the bass player of the band, thanked the judges, fellow nominees and the fans and critics of the band.

"You were the ones who accompanied us for the past 20 years," he said.

He also thanked his band members, saying it was their long friendship that made it possible for them to produce such an album.

"History of Tomorrow" went into the competition with a leading eight nominations. It also picked up the Best Lyricist award.

"History of Tomorrow" is Mayday's 9th studio album and their first one in close to five years.



Formed in the late 1990s, the band is known for its roots as a student band and for capturing the spirit of Taiwanese youth. Dubbed the "Chinese Beatles," Mayday has grown to become one of the most famous bands in the Chinese-speaking world.

It has claimed the Best Band title at the Golden Melody Awards in 2001, 2004, 2009 and 2012.

"History of Tomorrow" was competing against Khalil Fong's "Journey to the West," Guo Ding's "The Silent Star Stone," Eve Ai's "Talk About Eve," Waa Wei's "run! frantic flowers!" and Xu Jun's "Million Songs Hill."
