Golden Melody: Khalil Fong takes home best Mandarin male vocalist

Taipei, June 24 (CNA) Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong (方大同) edged out six other nominees to take home the Best Male Vocalist--Mandarin award for his album "Journey to the West" at the 28th Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday.

"Thank you. I never thought I would really be able to win (the award) today. Thank you very much to all the Golden Melody judges," Fong said.

He also thanked his fans, mother and colleagues.

Fong was nominated for Best Male Vocalist--Mandarin for the sixth time, but it was the first time he walked away the winner.

The 33-year-old musician is known for his soulful voice and the R&B and soul influences in his music.

Fong was up against Taiwan's Jay Chou ("Jay Chou's Bedtime Stories"), Crowd Lu ("What a Folk !!!!!!"), Yoga Lin ("Sell like Hot Cakes") and Dwagie ("Hard Knock"), China's Guo Ding ("The Silent Star Stone") and Malaysia's Namewee ("Cross Over Asia").
