China sends condolences to families of Taiwan hospital fire victims

Beijing, Aug. 13 (CNA) China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) expressed its condolences and sympathy after a fire killed nine people and injured 16 at a New Taipei hospital Monday.

"We're saddened by the news," said TAO spokesman Ma Xiaoguang (馬曉光) in a statement, adding that the Chinese government sympathized with the victims' families and those who were injured in the fire.

The fire broke out in the seventh-floor long-term care ward at around 4:30 a.m. in the Xinzhuang (新莊), New Taipei, branch of Taipei Hospital.

Nine people died and 16 were injured -- 10 with serious injuries and six with minor injuries -- police and hospital staff said after the fire was put out at 5:27 a.m.
