2023 Golden Horse Awards 

Taipei, Nov. 25 (CNA) The 60th Golden Horse Awards ceremony kicked off at National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei at 7 p.m. Saturday, celebrating achievements by filmmakers and the movie industry in the Chinese-speaking world.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Golden Bell Award-winning TV presenter LuLu (黃路梓茵), who has hosted the Golden Melody Awards for music and Golden Bell Awards for television programs.

Taiwan born-film director Ang Lee (李安) chaired the jury this year. Lee previously headed the Golden Horse committee from 2018 to early 2022 when he was succeeded by cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing (李屏賓).

The organizers handed out awards in 24 categories, including the best animated feature award, for which no films were nominated in 2021 and 2022.

Only one film -- "Pigsy" (八戒) -- is nominated in the best animated feature category this year. The film based on Chinese classic novel "Journey to the West" places the characters in the novel in a futuristic world.

"Snow in Midsummer" (五月雪) directed by Chong Keat Aun (張吉安) from Malaysia led with nine nominations. It is Chong's second feature film since he won the Golden Horse best new director award in 2020.

The film looks back at the racial riots that broke out on May 13, 1969 in Kuala Lumpur and its impact on victims' family.

The committee pointed out 62 movie submissions were received from Singapore and Malaysia this year, the highest ever.

Meanwhile, actress Brigitte Lin (林青霞) and director Chen Kun-hou (陳坤厚) were announced in June as recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award this year, with film producer Lin Shih-ken (林仕肯) named Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year.

In Taiwan, Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV) broadcast the red carpet event and the awards ceremony, which was also be streamed live online by My Video and Line Today.

In Singapore, people could watch through StarHub, while viewers in Malaysia and Brunei can use their local Astro services, according to the organizers.

Outside the four countries, both TTV and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (TGHFF) offered live streaming of the event starting at 5:30 p.m. through their respective YouTube channels.

Following the awards ceremony on Saturday, an 18-day film festival showcasing the latest films from Taiwan and abroad is set to conclude Sunday.

"Tales of Taipei" (愛情城事), "a heartfelt piece" that tells 10 stories of Taipei streets, people and communities shot by 10 directors from across the globe, including Chong premiered as the closing film on Thursday.
