Why Taiwan lacks more of its own comics

Do you ever wonder how much effort is put into writing and drawing your favorite comic books? One of Taiwan's earliest and most popular comic book artists Hsu Mao-sung and his generation endured censorship, or "the reviews," during Taiwan’s martial law period in the 1960s and 70s. Yet, while many artists quit, Mr. Hsu persevered. He received a Special Contribution Award from Taiwan's government in September, a belated acknowledgement of his efforts to preserve Taiwan's comic books industry. And the government announced plans to revive local comics. Mr. Hsu recently sat down with CNA to share his story.
