Zhang wins second straight Asian Games wushu bronze despite injury

Nagoya, Sept. 23 (CNA) Taiwan's Zhang Huan-yi (張煥宜) secured his second consecutive Asian Games bronze medal in the men's 75-kilogram wushu division Wednesday after a referee stopped his semifinal against Kazakhstan's Abdurashid Abdullayev due to bleeding from a reopened wound.

Zhang was knocked down twice in the first round of the semifinal at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

The second knockdown reopened an injury sustained in a previous match, prompting the referee to halt the bout due to bleeding. Under competition rules, the stoppage resulted in a knockout (WKO) loss for Zhang.

Zhang suffered a 6-centimeter cut above his right eyebrow in his opening bout Sunday, requiring nine stitches.

Immediate medical attention after the bout allowed him to remain in the tournament and compete in subsequent rounds.
