Magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes off coast of eastern Taiwan

Taipei, Sept. 30 (CNA) A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck over 100 kilometers off the coast of eastern Taiwan at 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA)

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter of the temblor was located at sea, 136 kilometers east of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 13.3 kilometers, according to the CWA.

The earthquake's intensity was highest in parts of Hualien, Yilan, Chiayi County, Changhua and Yunlin, where it measured a 2 on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 1 across much of the rest of the country, CWA data showed.
