Heat alerts in place in 11 cities and counties Wednesday

Taipei, July 1 (CNA) Under the influence of a Pacific high-pressure system, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) on Wednesday warned of scorching temperatures across Taiwan and issued heat advisories for 11 cities and counties.

According to the CWA, an "orange" heat alert was issued for New Taipei in the north; Changhua and Nantou counties in central Taiwan; Tainan and Kaohsiung cities and Pingtung County in the south; and Yilan County in the northeast, where temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius or higher are expected for three consecutive days.

The CWA also issued a "yellow" heat alert for Keelung and Taipei cities in the north, Yunlin County in the south, and Hualien County in the east, indicating that temperatures could reach 36 degrees on at least one day.

The heat advisories will remain in effect until late Wednesday afternoon, the agency said.

With sunny skies expected to prevail, daytime highs are forecast to range between 33 and 35 degrees in western Taiwan, and 32 and 33 degrees in eastern Taiwan, according to the CWA.

The agency also warned of high ultraviolet radiation levels, particularly around midday.

Stable weather conditions with limited cloud cover are expected across Taiwan, the CWA said. Only isolated showers are likely in Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula, while brief afternoon showers may develop in some mountainous areas, the CWA added.
