Kaohsiung Film Festival to honor Lynch, Hackman, Pai Ching-jui

Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) This year's Kaohsiung Film Festival will pay tribute to director David Lynch, actor Gene Hackman, and Taiwanese director Pai Ching-jui (白景瑞).

Hosted by the Ministry of Culture and the Kaohsiung City Government, the festival will run from Oct. 10 to 26 at multiple venues across the city, including the Kaohsiung Film Archive, Neiwei Arts Center, Kaohsiung Public Library, VR Film Lab, P3 Warehouse at the Pier-2 Art Center and the Kaohsiung Museum of History.

To honor Lynch and Hackman, who both passed away earlier this year, the festival will screen Lynch's 1990 film "Wild at Heart" and the 1973 drama "Scarecrow," starring Hackman.

Also featured in the lineup are "Audition" by acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Miike and a 4K restoration of "Gummo" by American filmmaker Harmony Korine.

A special section will spotlight Pai, who won two Golden Horse awards for best director and later received a lifetime achievement award. The program will include screenings of "Lonely Seventeen" (寂寞的十七歲), "Accidental Trio" (今天不回家), and "Where a Good Man Goes" (再見阿郎).

Best known for his collaborations with cinematographer Lin Tsan-ting (林贊庭), Pai's narrative films balanced commercial ambitions against the constraints of Taiwan's strict movie rating system, capturing both the awkwardness and vitality of Taiwanese cinema under martial law.
