As Taiex hits new high, Taiwan stock market ranks global No. 4 in market cap

Taipei, Sept. 23 (CNA) With the Taiex, the Taiwan Stock Exchange's benchmark index, repeatedly hitting a fresh high, the local bourse ranked as the fourth-largest stock market in terms of market value in the world as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the up-to-the-minute data released by MarketCapWatch.

On Wednesday, the Taiex rose 357.12 points, or 0.75 percent, at a new high of 48,157.29, pushing up the market capitalization of the local main board to about US$5.3 trillion, MarketCapWatch's data showed.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Taiwan replaced India, whose market value stood at US$4.94 trillion, to become the fourth-largest stock market in the world, according to MarketCapWatch's statistics.

Taiwan has benefited from a global boom in artificial intelligence development, with the Taiex soaring 19,193.69 points, or 66.27 percent so far this year after a surge of 5,928.50 points for 275.73 percent in 2025.

According to MarketCapWatch, Taiwan lagged behind only the United States (US$82.7 trillion in market cap), China (US$21.22 trillion) and Japan (US$8.59 trillion).

The United Kingdom took the sixth spot with US$4.86 trillion in market cap, ahead of South Korea (US$4.5 trillion), Canada (US$4.45 trillion), France (US$3.08 trillion) and Germany (US$3 trillion), according to MarketCapWatch.

MarketCapWatch is a platform for tracking real-time data on global capital markets, covering listed companies across different countries, regions, and industries, and primarily ranking them globally and regionally based on market capitalization.

The website provides data on stock price, market capitalization, revenue, net profit, earnings per share, and historical market capitalization changes.

The platform also compiles total market capitalization rankings for various countries and major stock markets, allowing users to observe the size of global capital markets and changes in corporate market capitalization.
