Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Taiwan won a total of 50 medals and six special prizes at a just-concluded international invention exhibition in Ukraine, taking second place in medal standing among all participating groups from over 20 countries, a Taipei-based invention society said Sunday.

Taiwanese participants in the XII International Salon of Inventions and New Technologies, which was held on Sept. 28-30 in Sevastopol, grabbed 27 gold medals, 20 silvers, three bronzes and six special awards, the Chinese Innovation and Invention Society reported.

A total of nearly 400 inventions from more than 20 nations, including Russia, Israel and Poland, were submitted at the three-day show, including 65 from Taiwan, the society noted.

A quick electrocardiogram (ECG) examination device developed by Huang Wei-chun (黃偉春), head of the Critical Care Center of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, won a gold medal and a special prize.

The device was designed to allow paramedics having not been trained to perform an ECG check to easily do the measurement during an urgent mission before sending the readings to hospitals or firefighting departments, where professional medical care personnel will decide whether or not a patient needs an urgent medical treatment, Huang said.
