Taipei, Oct. 30 (CNA) Taipei 101, the iconic landmark of Taiwan's capital and a hot tourist destination, has been selected as one of the world's most influential tall buildings of the last 50 years.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the management of Taipei 101, which held the World's Tallest Building title from 2004 to 2010, said it was awarded the honor by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) for its sustainable skyscraper development that has made it a global icon and has set a worldwide precedent in the field.

It is the first such honor that the CTBUH has awarded in 50 years, according to the statement.

Angela Chang (張振亞), president of Taipei Financial Center Corp., which owns the skyscraper, received the award in Chicago.

In a speech she gave at the ceremony, Chang said Taipei 101 belongs to Taiwan and is a reflection of Taiwan's spirit rather than just a combination of cement and glass.

On its website, the CTBUH hailed Taipei 101 for its energy-efficient luminaries, custom lighting controls, low-flow water fixtures, and smart energy management and control system.

The building has become a central component of the city's New Year's Eve celebrations, including a dazzling fireworks display, it said.
