Taipei, June 20 (CNA) As the influence of southwesterly air flows fades, weather across most of Taiwan is expected to be stable on Wednesday with cloudy to sunny skies forecast, except in southern parts of the country, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Forecaster Liu Pei-teng (劉沛騰) told the press that residents of northern Taiwan as well as Yilan and Hualien in the east can expect hot and humid weather on Wednesday, with daytime temperatures ranging from 32-34 degrees Celsius.

Weather in other areas of Taiwan is expected to stay relatively comfortable with the mercury forecast to range from 28-31 degrees during the day, Liu said.

Although the southwesterly air flows that impacted Taiwan in recent days are being downgraded to southwesterly winds, rain is expected to continue in southern Taiwan, including Taitung, Liu said.

Extreme heavy rain or heavy rain is possible in southern Taiwan, Liu said, so people involved in outdoor activities should remain vigilant about flooding in the low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.

Heavy rain means accumulated rainfall of more than 80mm in 24 hours or more than 40mm of rainfall in one hour, while extreme heavy rain refers to more than 200mm in 24 hours or accumulated rainfall of more than 100mm in three hours, according to the CWB.

Liu said there should be less rain in southern Taiwan Wednesday than the previous day, with rainfall forecast to be brief, though thunderstorms are possible in mountainous areas in the afternoon.

He said as the southwesterly winds gradually fade, weather in Taiwan is expected to turn more stable over the next week, but sporadic showers in the afternoons remain likely in both mountainous and low-lying areas.
