Mailiao residents to stage further protest against FPG

Taipei, Aug. 2 (CNA) Residents of Mailiao Township are planning to rally at the petrochemical complex of the Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) Aug. 4 to reiterate their demand for an immediate halt to operations at the fire-stricken facility.

Hsu Liu-pin, a township representative, said Tuesday that an estimated 300 local residents will deliver their appeal to company officials.

Besides demanding a full suspension of the complex, Hsu said the protesters will demand that FPG put forward an evacuation plan so that locals can keep away from the danger zone should similar accidents happen again.

Following a protest the previous day held by residents of Taisi, Baojhong, Dongshih and Lunbei -- all townships around the petrochemical complex -- Hsu said the new protest will be an "ultimatum" to the company.

"If they fail to give us a good answer, we will launch a long-term battle against them," he said.

Hsu said the protests will become better organized and larger in scale, and will be held intensively until the operations of the complex become impossible.

For instance, Hsu said, local residents will not rule out the possibility of occupying streets surrounding the complex to enforce massive road closures in the area.

The anger of Mailiao residents was prompted by a series of seven fires that have broken out at the FPG complex over the past year.
