Taipei, Sept. 22 (CNA) The number of automobiles exported via Port of Taipei in the January-August period rose 37 percent year-on-year to 44,000, a port official said Saturday.
During that period, the majority of automobiles shipped from the northern Taiwan port were to Middle East markets, said Lu Tsung-ming, a manager at Taipei Port Container Terminal Corp.
He said 99 percent of the vehicles exported to the Middle East via the port were Corolla Altis, a brand manufactured by the Taiwan subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp.
By the end of the year, the number of automobiles shipped from the Taipei Port is likely to reach 60,000, Lu said.
The growth in automobile exports from the port can be attributed to the fact that Toyota has shifted its production lines for Corolla Altis from Japan to Taiwan, Lu said.
In addition, the market has been responding well to Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis sedans, which are assembled in Taiwan by China Motor Corp., he said.
Despite the global economic slowdown, automobile exports in Taiwan have maintained momentum thanks to an efficient assembly line that stretches across Taoyuan and Miaoli, he said.
