Asunción, Aug. 15 (CNA) A Taiwanese football player based in Paraguay suggested to President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Wednesday that Taiwan try to improve its sports environment by developing closer links in that field with the South American country.

Lin Yu-wei (林育葦), a member of Cerro Porteno pro football club, said that because Taiwan has contributed significantly to the alleviation of poverty in Paraguay, many Paraguayans have expressed their willingness to offer Taiwan something in return.

Against that backdrop, Taiwan can develop its football environment by learning from Paraguay and establishing exchanges in the field of sport, Lin told Tsai, who was in the country for the inauguration of its president and vice president.

For example, young players from Taiwan can travel to Paraguay during their winter or summer vacations to attend football training camps, said Lin, a 29-year-old player who has been in Paraguay for the past two years.

He said, however, that Taiwan would also need to create a better local environment, including improved facilities and greater opportunities, to nurture skilled football players.

Lin said that when he headed to Paraguay about two years ago, it was in search of a better environment to develop his football career.

In response, President Tsai said Lin was a pioneer in his field and she promised to help encourage exchanges between Taiwan and Paraguay in the area of football.

Tsai is on a nine-day trip to two of Taiwan's diplomatic allies, Paraguay and Belize.
