Taipei, April 19 (CNA) Five terrestrial television networks announced Thursday they will deliver high-definition broadcasts of the 2012 London Olympic Games, in line with the government's implementation of a nationwide switch to digital broadcasting this summer.

With 99 days to go until the opening day of the London Olympics, representatives of China Television Co., Taiwan Television Enterprise, Chinese Television System, Formosa TV (FTV) and Taiwan Public Television Service said at a press conference they will broadcast the Olympic Games in high definition.

FTV General Manager Chen Gang-sin said starting July 1 this year, the government will implement a nationwide switch to digital broadcasting, providing the public with better sound and viewing qualities.

"It would be a pity not to broadcast the green sports fields in high definition," Chen said.

Executive Yuan spokesman Philip Yang said between May 7 and June 30, the country will switch from analogue to digital broadcasting in four stages.

Viewers will need to have a set-top box or television that accepts digital broadcasts to view digital programs, he said.

The London Olympic Games will run from July 27 to Aug. 12.
