Nagoya, Oct. 1 (CNA) Taiwan's Chang Cheng-wei (張正韋) won a silver medal in the men's individual compound archery at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Thursday, recording the country's best finish in the event.

The 22-year-old advanced through the quarterfinals and semifinals before losing 149-145 to South Korea's Kim Jongho, who finished just one point short of the maximum score of 150.

It was Chang's first individual medal at an international competition and his second podium finish at these Games, following the bronze he won in the men's team event on Wednesday.

Chang said he had been nervous throughout the final, and that his muscles trembled despite repeated efforts to relax.

"My coach kept telling me to stay calm, and I kept reminding myself to relax, but I don't think I managed to," he said.

Although disappointed, Chang said he regained his rhythm in the final round and learned from the experience.

"After reaching the final, all I could think about was beating the Korean opponent," he said. "Only afterward did I realize I should have focused on myself."

Chang's coach Lin Che-wei (林哲瑋) said Chang's nerves prevented him from putting pressure on Kim early in the match, but added that the young archer would have more opportunities.

India's Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru took bronze.

Taiwan also won silver in the men's C1 canoe slalom event, with Wu Jung-cheng (吳融政) finishing in 119.09 seconds behind China's Zhang Zhicheng (張志成), who clocked 98.09.

The 23-year-old earned his first Asian Games medal and Taiwan's second canoeing podium finish of the Games this year.

In the men's tennis doubles, Hsu Yu-hsiou (許育修) and Ho Chen-jui (何承叡) took bronze after losing their semifinal to South Korea's Nam Jisung and Park Uisung.

The Taiwanese pair lost the opening set 6-7 (3-7), won the second 6-2, then fell 9-11 in the deciding match tiebreak.

As of Thursday night, Taiwan had won three golds, 12 silvers, and 27 bronzes.
