Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA) Micron Technology Inc. has so far invested more than NT$1.6 trillion (US$50 billion) in Taiwan, with about half of that investment made over the past four years, according to Micron Taiwan Chairman Donghui Lu (盧東暉) on Thursday.

Lu made the remarks at a media gathering held in the morning, where he said the U.S. memory chipmaker's expansion in Taiwan has continued, with capacity being expanded at its facilities in Taoyuan, Tongluo Township in Miaoli County, Taichung and Tainan.

Micron has DRAM manufacturing facilities in Taiwan and Japan, is expanding NAND production in Singapore, and is developing advanced packaging lines for next-generation DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), he said.

To meet growing customer demand driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, he said the company has continued to expand production in the United States as well as operations around the world, including in Taiwan.

About half of Micron's NT$1.6 trillion investment in Taiwan so far was made over the past four years, he said, noting that its domestic operations currently cover front-end and back-end manufacturing, packaging and testing, as well as HBM production, research and development, product development, sales and laboratory functions.

Lu said the company's new production lines in Taoyuan and Tongluo are expected to begin operations in 2027-28.

In Taichung, Micron's largest manufacturing base in Taiwan, he added that the company is also expanding its support for HBM and other advanced AI memory production and packaging, with a second advanced packaging facility scheduled to begin HBM production in mid-October.

Looking ahead, Micron said during the event that memory supply is expected to be tighter in 2027 and 2028 than this year, with customers continuing to increase commitments under long-term supply agreements, reflecting expectations of sustained demand.

Most of Micron's HBM output for 2027 is already covered by contracts, with prices also expected to be higher than this year, the company added.
