CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 20,448 new COVID-19 cases, 22 deaths

Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) Taiwan on Monday reported 20,448 new cases of COVID-19 and 22 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but one suffered from chronic illnesses or other severe diseases, and nine had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.

Also on Monday, the CECC reported 19 COVID-19 cases newly classified as severe and 31 newly classified as moderate.

Of the 5,179,914 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 10,464 have been classified as severe infections and 13,242 as moderate, accounting for 0.20 percent and 0.26 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Aug. 28.

Regional breakdown

Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Monday, with 4,123, followed by Taoyuan with 2,471 and Taipei with 2,470.

Taichung had 2,249 new cases, Kaohsiung 1,504, Tainan 1,220, Changhua 845, Hsinchu County 798, Hsinchu City 604, Miaoli 512, Pingtung 488, Hualien 429 and Yilan 414.

Yunlin had 394 cases, Keelung 385, Nantou 317, Chiayi County 305, Chiayi City 205, Taitung 162, Penghu 143, Kinmen 90 and the Matsu Islands 31, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has recorded 5,242,009 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 5,214,657 domestic cases.

With the 22 deaths reported Monday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 9,866.
