CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports lowest number of COVID-19 cases in three weeks
Taipei, June 7 (CNA) Taiwan on Monday reported 214 cases of COVID-19, including 211 domestic infections and three imported ones, the lowest single-day number of cases the country has seen in over three weeks.
The last time Taiwan reported a case count lower than Monday's was on May 16, when an initial 207 cases were reported. The case count for May 16 was later revised to 285, due to a backlog of test results.
The lower number of cases could be attributed to fewer tests being administered over the weekend, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said at a Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) press conference.
Chen urged everyone to continue following disease prevention measures under the Level 3 COVID-19 alert, which was further extended to June 28 on Monday.
Of the 211 domestic infections, New Taipei recorded the most cases with 82, followed by Taipei with 60 and Miaoli County with 45.
Changhua County reported eight cases, while three each were recorded in Penghu County and Hsinchu, Taoyuan and Keelung cities. One each was recorded in Yilan, Chiayi, Pingtung, and Hsinchu counties, according to the CECC.
Four of the new cases had unknown sources of infection, the CECC said.
The three imported cases of COVID-19 involved two Philippine nationals who had come to work in Taiwan, and a Taiwanese national who recently returned from India.
The 26 deaths from COVID-19 reported Monday were 20 men and six women, aged 50-100, who passed away between May 31 and June 6, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has confirmed a total of 11,491 COVID-19 cases, over 10,000 of which are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 cases in a single day.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the country has risen to 286, including 274 recorded since May 15, CECC data shows.
