CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan planning to loosen quarantine rules for business travelers
Taipei, June 9 (CNA) Taiwan is devising regulations that will make it easier for business travelers to visit Taiwan after border restrictions are relaxed, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Monday.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan has barred foreign nationals, with some exceptions, from entering the country since March 19, and all overseas arrivals, including Taiwanese nationals, are subject to a 14-day quarantine upon entry.
Though no specific date has been set for when these restrictions will be lifted, foreign business travelers from low-risk countries will be the first to be allowed entry when the restrictions are eased, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said Monday.
Travelers will have to present proof that they had tested negative for COVID-19 using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test before entering the country, and will still have to be quarantined in Taiwan for at least five days, Chuang said.
At the end of the quarantine period, travelers will be required to take a COVID-19 test at their own expense, and those who test negative will be free to proceed with their visit while still following a self-health management protocol for 21 days, Chuang said.
The protocol requires individuals to minimize time spent in public, wear a surgical mask, check their body temperature twice daily and report any suspected symptoms to the CECC.
Specific details about the plan are still under discussion, and Taiwan will also have to negotiate with other countries to determine which of them to open its borders to, Chuang said.
