Taiwan tops medal count at international invention contest
Taipei, Oct. 3 (CNA) Taiwan topped the medal table at a global invention competition last week, finishing with a total count of 45, the country's invention society said Sunday.
At the annual International Salon of Inventions and New Technologies on Sept. 27, Taiwan won 31 gold, 11 silver and three bronze medals, with inventions ranging from sports applications to healthcare devices, the society said.
While Taiwan bagged fewer medals than last year when it won 50, it increased its gold medal count from 29 to 31 and finished at the top of the table overall with 45, according to Taiwan's Chinese Innovation and Invention Society (CIIS).
One of the innovative gold-winning inventions submitted by Taiwan was a healthcare device developed jointly by Matthew Ma (馬惠明), vice superintendent at National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch, according to the CIIS.
The non-contact detection device monitors a person's heart rate and breathing via a camera, and sensors transmit the data to an artificial intelligence center for analysis of the patient's condition, the CIIS said.
Another notable entry to the virtual contest in Crimea was a sports training device invented by a university team, led by former Taiwanese basketball player Hsu Chih-chao (許智超), who was once the nation's top midrange shooter in the Super Basketball League.
The device is so versatile, it can be used in a range of sports, serving as a warm-up machine for athletics competitors or as a training device for weightlifters, for example, said Hsu, who now teaches at Hungkuo Delin University of Technology.
The annual International Salon of Inventions and New Technologies competition usually draws contestants from across the globe and typically last for several days, with the submissions displayed at exhibition centers, according the CIIS.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, this year's event was held virtually for one day, in Sevastopol, Crimea, the CIIS said.
