Taipei, Oct. 24 (CNA) LINE Corp., the mobile messaging and communication services supplier, said Wednesday that it has launched a ride-hailing platform in Taiwan, joining forces with TaxiGo, a Taiwanese version of Uber.
Roger Chen (陳立人), managing director of LINE Taiwan, said in a press conference in collaboration with TaxiGo, that LINE has unveiled its "LINE TAXI" platform.
According to Chen, TaxiGo began operations in 2017 and has more than 430,000 customers so far.
Chen said TaxiGo is the first taxi fleet operator to join LINE TAXI and the new platform will welcome more taxi companies to get on board in the future.
LINE said TaxiGo has become the first company under LINE's start-up cultivation program to grow and work with LINE.
LINE began the start-up program -- LINE Protostar -- in Taiwan at the end of 2015, allocating resources to help start-ups grow, and so far, the program has provided assistance to more than 30 start-ups in several different businesses, such as daily necessities, entertainment, education and financial services.
Tang Hsin (唐欣), senior supervisor of LINE Taiwan's strategy division, said the Protostar program will provide its members with business consulting services and will also provide marketing resources to its members, including NT$300,000 (US$9,804) in advertising and marketing expenses.
In addition, Tang said, through a similar program of LINE in Thailand -- the Scale Up Program -- start-ups in Taiwan are expected to extend their reach to the Southeast Asian market.
In addition, LINE has also launched an online to offline platform -- LINE SPOT -- in Taiwan, to allow local consumers to make quick connection with vendors and service providers and facilitate transactions. Under LINE SPOT, consumers will have information about whether they are able to use LINE Pay to pay for their purchases, whether they will get a discount, or whether the stores have their own LINE accounts, LINE said.
According to LINE, the messaging service provider has about 21 million active users in Taiwan and these users send more than 1 billion messages a day through LINE, making the company a critical part of their daily lives.
Moreover, LINE said, Taiwan's users account for more than 50 percent of video messages sent through LINE, the highest in the world, indicating that the country has a well-developed Internet environment.
