LIVE UPDATE/Taiwan's medal standing at 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games

Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Taiwan, competing under the name of Chinese Taipei, has gained 5 medals -- including 3 silver and 2 bronze -- at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games (the 20th Asian Games), as of 4 p.m. Monday.

The Asian Games are taking place in Japan's Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.

Since Taiwan first participated in the Asian Games in 1954, it has won a total of 586 medals -- 118 gold, 164 silver and 304 bronze -- through the end of the previous edition in Hangzhou, China, in 2022.

At the Hangzhou Asian Games, Taiwan won 19 gold, 20 silver and 28 bronze medals, ranking sixth overall.

That performance tied Taiwan's showing at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games for the most gold medals it has won at an Asian Games.

Its 67 total medals in Hangzhou matched the number won at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou and 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and rank as the second most in its history, behind the 77 won in Bangkok in 1998.

This year, Taiwan sent 482 athletes to compete in 34 sports.

The table tennis team is being led by Lin Yun-ju (林昀儒) and Cheng I-ching (鄭怡靜), while the boxing team includes Huang Hsiao-wen (黃筱雯), Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) and Chen Nien-chin (陳念琴).

The badminton team includes five-time Asian Games participant Chou Tien-chen (周天成) and three-time participant Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟), while the swimming team is led by Wang Kuan-hung (王冠閎), who won Taiwan's first Asian Games medal in the men's butterfly events at the Hangzhou Games.
