Taipei, Oct. 20 (CNA) The supply of the iPhone XR, one of Apple Inc.'s three newest iPhones, which is expected to see strong demand worldwide, is estimated at only 20,000 initially in Taiwan, according to sources from the local distribution network.
Apple started pre-orders of the iPhone XR at 3 p.m. Friday Taipei time globally before the device hits store shelves Oct. 26.
The sources said that in the week until Oct. 26, the supply of the iPhone XR is expected to reach only 20,000 units and the number could total less than 50,000 in the first few weeks into the sale.
They said the supply will be the smallest for any iPhone models going on sale in Taiwan, citing a shortage of components.
Due to its more affordable price than its two sister models -- the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max -- many consumers around the world have put on hold their purchase plans, waiting for the launch of the iPhone XR.
Global sales of the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max began Sept. 21. In Taiwan, the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone XS Max carries a starting price of NT$39,900 (US$1,290) and the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone XS has a starting price of NT$35,900.
As for the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone XR, the starting price is set at NT$26,900.
Far EasTone Telecommunications Co., Ltd., one of the five major telecommunications companies in Taiwan, said it has received orders for more than 10,000 iPhone XRs already, while Chunghwa Telecom Co., another major telecom service provider, said its iPhone XRs have been fully booked, but declined to disclose the exact number.
In addition to its lower cost, the iPhone XR is expected to attract consumers due to its color options, as the new iPhone will be available in six colors -- white, black, blue, coral, yellow and red, the sources said.
Tsann Kuen Enterprise Co., one of Taiwan's leading 3C product distributors, said the black and white iPhone XRs are the most popular in its stores nationwide, while consumers joined the pre-order sales of ELife Mall, another 3C distributor here, also favor the black and white models.
The sources said the tight supply of the iPhone XR is unlikely to be eased until late November, when component supplies increase.
